No instrument does introspection just like the violin. Ours is probably not a time for giant violin personalities – the Mischa, Jascha, Toscha , Sascha pack of George Gershwin’s tune – however a few of immediately’s smaller voices have a lot to say, if solely we will discover the esoteric releases and spare the time to hear.
Carolyn Widmann, sister of the eminent German composer Jörg Widmann, frames her solo recital round meditations by J S Bach and the medieval nun, Hildegard of Bingen. In between, she performs substantial items by two of the 20th century’s foremost virtuosos, the Romanian George Enescu and the Belgian Eugène Ysaye. By doing so she attracts the ear into each period of western music – monastic, classical, romantic and trendy – transacting connections that aren’t usually accessible. Widmann is a severe thinker and a superb participant in her 50s. Her instrument is a 1782 Guadagnini.
The Georgian composer Giya Kancheli, an early refugee from the collapsing Soviet Union, is understood mainly for his expressive symphonies, every a significant orchestral doc of its time. His 18 miniatures for violin and piano are drawn from his many theatre and movie scores, a lot in the best way the Erich Korngold and Nino Rota recycled their display screen hits for the live performance corridor.
In contrast to them, Kancheli (who died in 2019) wrote very small for violin and piano, delving inward for truths he couldn’t categorical on movie or beneath Communism. The music is hypnotic, on second listening addictive. The gamers on this Delos launch are a pair of South Africans, Piet Koornhof and Albie van Schalwyk. Completely revelatory.
